BODEGAS CORISCA

RIAS BAIXAS

Bodegas Corisca is located in the sub-area of Tea County, on the right bank of Miño River in the province of Pontevedra, almost on the border with Portugal, and belongs to the D.O. Rías Baixas. Its Galician name Corisca means cold north wind, which brings rain and hail in the winter.

Located in the Rias Baixas DO, Bodegas Corisca is a small pioneer winery on recovering organic farming practices, in the care and conservation of their own eco-terroir, which provides exclusivity for their wines. The production is limited to the grapes of their own vineyards, currently 4 hectares of only albariño grape. Their wine is the result of their inherited passion and love for their vineyards, treated carefully, without the use of chemicals or herbicides, only natural fertilizers are used when the vine requires it. In addition, their vineyards are in a grated system, thus avoiding humidity and improving aeration and maturation.

Their grapevines are more than 35 years old. All human intervention is highly respectful to the environment: restoring the microbiological life on the surface layer of the soil, manually controlling the vegetation, green pruning and thinning clusters. By using these methods we get small healthy grapes with excellent acidity, prioritizing quality over quantity.

In this winery, they are fully committed to the future of both the wine and the traditional agriculture. Their work, just as their ancestors did, is listening to the vine, giving it what it needs and not the other way around. The minimal oenological intervention is also followed in the cellar, always oriented to extract the maximum potential of the grapes. The fermentation is spontaneous and natural, with endogenous yeasts. The wine is aged with its fine lees for around three to four months. After the last racking and a slight bottling, which is not done before the month of May, the wine is left to stand for a month in the bottle. Corisca white wine is ready for the market only when it reaches maturity well into the year following its harvest, thus ensuring a long life.

The vineyards and the production of the wine are certified by the Organic Agriculture regulatory body in Spain.

VINTAGE REPORT

In the south of Galicia the last vintage 2016 could be described as a high quality but with a low yield compared to previous years.

During spring, the conditions were not optimal for flowering and purging which meant that the number of clusters and grapes formed were smaller than in other years. Summer was also exceptional in that the weather was drier than we are used to. This resulted in smaller grapes than usual with a highly concentrated aromatic charge. At harvest time the weather remained sunny and dry, providing excellent ripening conditions for the grapes. These conditions allowed the harvest to greatly exceed the parameters of alcoholic graduation and acidity as well as maintaining good sanitation, an important consideration.

For the 2016 campaign, we have obtained a high quality raw material that has facilitated the winery processes so we can work with our own natural yeasts to extract the best of the grapes.
